OW Essentials No.10 - Modern Wedding LUT

A contemporary, bleach-bypass-inspired wedding LUT with reduced saturation, dense blacks, pale highlights and selective warmth.

A BOLDER, MORE EDITORIAL WEDDING LOOK

Modern Wedding moves away from the soft, warm and pastel colour commonly associated with wedding films. Reduced saturation, a narrower palette and firmer contrast create dense blacks, pale highlights and a subtly metallic tonal character.

Cool, steely neutrals shape the image while selected warmer colours remain present in skin, florals and practical light. Greens become deeper and more subdued, helping people and warmer details stand apart from their surroundings.

The result has the restrained, silver-retention character associated with bleach bypass, adapted into a contemporary wedding look rather than a literal recreation of the photochemical process.

What you will notice

  • Reduced overall saturation with selective warm colour retention

  • Dense blacks and pronounced tonal separation

  • Pale, controlled highlights

  • Cool, steely neutrals

  • Deeper and more subdued greens

  • Natural warmth retained through skin, florals and practical light

  • A contemporary editorial finish rather than a soft pastel aesthetic

  • Consistent creative direction across the included camera profiles

How it was designed

Modern Wedding combines selective desaturation with a firmer contrast structure and controlled colour separation. The palette is reduced without becoming monochrome, allowing warmer elements such as skin, flowers and tungsten light to remain visible against cooler surroundings.

Its character is inspired by the reduced colour, increased density and silver-like tonality associated with bleach bypass. It is not a measured reproduction of a specific film stock, laboratory process or photochemical print.

Camera-specific versions are designed for direct use with their stated log profiles. A Rec.709/sRGB version is also included for footage that has already been transformed or recorded in a standard display-referred colour space.

FAQ

What kind of look does Modern Wedding create?

Modern Wedding creates a desaturated, contrast-forward look with dense blacks, pale highlights and cool, steely neutrals. Selected warmer colours remain present in skin, florals and practical light, preventing the reduced palette from becoming fully monochrome.

Is this a literal bleach-bypass emulation?

No. It is a contemporary digital look inspired by visual characteristics associated with bleach bypass: reduced saturation, pronounced contrast, silver-like tonal density and selective colour retention. It does not reproduce a specific laboratory process or film stock.

How does the LUT affect skin tones?

Skin retains comparatively warm colour against the cooler and more subdued surroundings. The final result still depends on lighting, exposure and white balance, so correct these before applying the LUT and make shot-level refinements afterwards.

Is this the same as the Modern Wedding Lightroom preset?

Both versions follow the same bleach-bypass-inspired visual direction, but they are built for different workflows. The LUT is designed for motion and colour-grading software, while the Lightroom preset uses editable photographic controls for still images.

Can I apply the LUT directly to log footage?

Yes. Choose the camera-specific version that matches the log profile used to record your footage. These versions include the required transformation and creative look.

When should I use the Rec.709/sRGB version?

Use this version when your footage has already been correctly transformed to Rec.709 or was recorded in a standard Rec.709 or sRGB profile. Do not apply a camera-specific log version to footage that has already been transformed.

Which LUT file should I use?

Choose the file that exactly matches your camera and recording profile. Using the wrong input version will produce incorrect contrast and colour.

Does Modern Wedding work in mixed lighting?

Yes, but strong combinations of daylight, tungsten and coloured practical light should be balanced before applying the LUT. Wedding-day lighting can vary considerably, so daylight, interiors and reception footage may require separate shot-level corrections.

Does the LUT include grain, halation or glow?

No. A .cube LUT changes colour and tone. Spatial effects such as grain, halation, bloom and gate weave need to be added separately.

Can I reduce the strength of the look?

Yes. Reduce the LUT intensity using node key output, effect opacity or the equivalent mixing control in your editing software.
