A soft instant-film-inspired look with dusty reds, muted greens and a gently faded tonal response.

Personal colour with the softness of an ageing instant print

Romantic Instant is designed for footage that should feel personal, warm and slightly timeworn without losing its structure. Instead of placing one heavy vintage cast over the entire image, the look creates character through a more controlled colour response.

Dusty pink-red tones settle into the shadows and darker midtones, greens become warmer and more subdued, and brighter areas take on a softened, lightly green-tinted warmth. Saturation is reduced without removing colour completely, giving daylight, skin and natural surroundings a quieter, more tactile quality.

The result feels nostalgic but remains practical. Skin takes on a warm, softened rendering without becoming heavily orange. Foliage, stone, wood, flowers and faded fabrics move into a restrained palette, while enough tonal separation remains to keep people and details readable.

Romantic Instant works especially well when the footage already contains human connection, natural texture and available light. Use it for travel films, couple sessions, weddings, lifestyle work or narrative sequences that should feel closer to a remembered moment than a polished digital image.

What you will notice

  • Dusty pink and red colour through shadows and darker midtones
  • Warm, muted greens with less dominant foliage saturation
  • Softened blue and cyan tones in daylight environments
  • Warm highlights with a restrained green-tinted direction
  • Gently reduced saturation and a less clinical digital finish
  • Warm skin rendering that remains separated from the surrounding palette
  • A choice between a fuller Standard version and a more subdued Faded version

Two variations of the look

Standard The main Romantic Instant treatment, with the clearest colour separation and a fuller expression of the dusty red, muted green and warm highlight palette.

Faded A quieter interpretation with a more subdued, timeworn finish. Use it when the Standard version feels too present or when the footage should resemble an older, softly faded print.

How it was designed

Romantic Instant is an authored, film-inspired colour design rather than a measured reproduction of one specific instant-film stock.

The look takes cues from the way ageing instant prints can shift over time: softened saturation, warmer paper-like highlights, dusty red colour and greens that move away from clean digital reproduction. These characteristics were balanced to create a repeatable creative treatment rather than a novelty vintage effect.

Best suited for

  • Travel and lifestyle films
  • Couples, weddings and personal documentary work
  • Portraits and people-led footage in natural light
  • Flowers, foliage, summer daylight and textured environments
  • Music videos and narrative memory sequences
  • Projects that need warmth and nostalgia without an aggressive retro effect

FAQ

Is Romantic Instant a Polaroid film emulation?

No. It is an original instant-film-inspired colour design. It takes cues from ageing instant prints but does not claim to reproduce one specific Polaroid camera, film pack or chemical process.

Which variation should I use?

Start with Standard when you want the complete colour treatment. Choose Faded for a quieter, more subdued result or for footage that already has strong contrast and colour.

Which camera version should I apply?

Use the version prepared for the recording profile of your footage. For example, use the S-Log3 version with Sony S-Log3 footage and the D-Log M version with DJI D-Log M footage.

Do I need to correct the footage first?

Yes. Set exposure and white balance before judging the look. Final shot-to-shot balancing should still be completed after applying the LUT.

Can I reduce the strength?

Yes. Use the LUT mix, opacity or node controls available in your editing application to reduce the intensity.

Does the LUT include grain, bloom or halation?

No. The package contains colour LUTs. Texture effects such as grain, bloom and halation can be added separately when required.

Will it produce the same result on every camera?

No. Camera colour, exposure, lighting, lenses and white balance all influence the final result. The source-specific versions provide a more appropriate starting point, but final balancing remains part of the grade.
