The Sony FX5 is not simply an FX3 with a higher model number. It is a dedicated compact cinema camera built around a new 16.6-megapixel full-frame stacked sensor, 5K open-gate recording, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW and a CineAlta-style operating system.

The short verdict is that the FX5 looks like one of Sony’s most important compact cinema cameras in years. Its combination of fast sensor readout, strong low-light performance, internal RAW and proper exposure tools is more meaningful than the modest increase from 4K to 5K suggests.

It is not an automatic upgrade for every FX3 owner, however. The FX5 has no internal ND filter, no SDI, no stills mode and no support for recording directly to a USB-C SSD. Its new XLR handle and optional EVF are expensive, cannot normally be mounted together, and some of the headline recording modes will not arrive until August 2027 or later.

If you need what the FX5 can do at launch, it is a compelling camera. If the promised 5K 120p or 4K 240p modes are the main reason you want one, wait.

Important context: this is an early assessment

Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, 2026, with availability planned for August. At the time of writing, independent reviews have been performed with preproduction cameras and firmware. Final production units have not yet completed the usual range of long-term reliability and laboratory tests.

This article therefore separates three things:

  • Specifications confirmed by Sony

  • Measurements reported by independent early testers

  • Our assessment of who the camera is actually for

It does not present Sony’s claimed “15+ stops” as an independently verified final result, and it does not assume that promised firmware features are already available.

The new stacked sensor is the real upgrade

The FX5’s 5K resolution is useful, but resolution is not the most important part of the new sensor.

The fully stacked design allows Sony to read the sensor much faster than many high-resolution open-gate cameras. That matters because a slow rolling shutter can bend vertical lines, skew fast movement and make handheld footage feel less natural.

In early controlled testing, CVP measured approximately 8.5 ms in 5K 3:2 open gate and 5.5 ms in 16:9. Gerald Undone reported similar figures of approximately 8.5 ms for open gate and 5.7 ms for full-frame 16:9 in his FX5 sensor test.

Those are excellent results for a rolling-shutter camera. The normal 16:9 readout is faster than the roughly 8.7 ms commonly measured from the FX3 and FX6, while the open-gate mode remains fast enough for most handheld, documentary, automotive and action work.

The trade-off appears when Dual Gain is enabled. Early measurements show readout time rising to around 14 ms in 16:9 and approximately 18 ms in open gate. Dual Gain can produce cleaner shadows and greater usable dynamic range, but it is not a free improvement. For rapid pans, fast action or unstable handheld work, the normal readout may be the better choice.

That ability to choose is one of the FX5’s strengths:

  • Use the standard mode when motion rendering and high frame rates matter most.

  • Use Dual Gain when controlled movement and maximum shadow quality matter more.

Image quality and dynamic range

Sony claims more than 15 stops of latitude in S-Log3. Manufacturer figures are difficult to compare because test methods, noise thresholds and processing differ, so the claim should not be treated as 15 perfectly clean stops.

The early evidence is nevertheless promising. Independent testing suggests that the FX5 produces around 14 stops of highly usable range in its strongest Dual Gain configurations, with unusually clean shadows for a compact full-frame camera. Normal X-OCN recording is noisier, as expected from a less processed RAW signal, while internal XAVC benefits more from the camera’s noise suppression.

This creates a practical choice rather than one universally correct setting:

  • X-OCN with noise reduction reduced or disabled preserves texture and lets post-production control the noise.

  • XAVC with in-camera noise suppression is easier for fast-turnaround work.

  • Dual Gain gives the cleanest lower tonal range but restricts frame rates, sensitivity and readout speed.

The 5K sensor also gives the FX5 slightly more detail than the FX3 without moving into a very high-resolution design that would compromise speed and low-light performance. Early comparisons suggest that the 4K image is at least as detailed as the FX3 and may be slightly sharper, but it is not intended to deliver the extremely crisp appearance of a 7K- or 8K-to-4K oversample.

That looks like a sensible compromise for a cinema camera: enough resolution for a clean 4K finish, reframing and stabilisation, while retaining fast motion rendering and large photosites.

Open gate is useful, but read the small print

The FX5 is the first compact Sony FX-series camera to record the full 3:2 sensor area. This is useful for:

  • Creating both horizontal and vertical deliverables from the same take

  • Reframing interviews or commercial footage after the shoot

  • Adding stabilisation without losing as much of the intended composition

  • Recording more sensor height with anamorphic lenses

  • Protecting multiple aspect ratios during production

At launch, however, 5K 3:2 open gate is available only in X-OCN. You cannot record open-gate XAVC on the launch firmware.

Sony plans to add 3:2 XAVC S-I recording in a future update. It also plans 5K 3:2 X-OCN at up to 120p and cropped 4K at up to 240p, but the company’s own footnotes state that these modes are scheduled for August 2027 or later.

The launch camera records:

  • 5K 3:2 open-gate X-OCN up to 60p

  • 4K XAVC up to 120p

  • Full HD up to 240p

Do not buy the FX5 today as though 5K 120p and 4K 240p are already included. Firmware roadmaps can change, and August 2027 is a long time after the camera starts shipping.

Internal X-OCN RAW is a major advantage

The FX5 is the first FX-series model to record Sony’s X-OCN RAW format internally. It offers three 16-bit scene-linear variants:

  • X-OCN LT for the least compression

  • X-OCN C1 for a smaller data footprint

  • X-OCN C2 for the most efficient files

“16-bit” describes the scene-linear X-OCN recording format; it should not be confused with a guarantee of 16 stops of dynamic range. Its value is the flexibility it gives post-production over exposure, white balance, highlight handling and colour processing without an external RAW recorder.

The files are still substantial. In a preproduction test, CineD measured approximately 5.54GB per minute for 5K 24p X-OCN LT, 4.13GB for C1 and 3.34GB for C2. The smaller C2 option is useful, but it is not a lightweight consumer codec.

There are additional workflow restrictions:

  • X-OCN is available only in Cine EI.

  • Sony recommends VPG400 CFexpress Type A media for demanding modes.

  • The camera cannot record directly to an external USB-C SSD.

  • Lens-distortion correction is not baked into internally recorded X-OCN files.

  • Sony or supported E-mount lens corrections must be applied later using compatible Catalyst software and embedded metadata.

Software support is improving but is still developing. As of July 22, Adobe supports FX5 X-OCN LT, C1 and C2 in beta versions of Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder. Adobe says improved playback and RAW controls are still coming.

For paid work, test the complete path from card to edit, conform, grade and archive before committing a production to X-OCN.

Triple base ISO is more useful than it sounds

The FX3 and FX6 are famous for their 800 and 12,800 base ISO settings in S-Log3. The large gap between them is often awkward: ISO 800 can require more light, while ISO 12,800 can be unnecessarily sensitive.

The FX5 adds ISO 4000 between them:

  • ISO 800 for controlled lighting and daylight

  • ISO 4000 for interiors, events and available-light work

  • ISO 12,800 for genuinely dark environments

The middle base is likely to be one of the most useful day-to-day improvements. It reduces the need to choose between lifting an ISO 800 image or adding strong ND at ISO 12,800.

This does not automatically make every ISO value equally clean, and it does not mean the FX5 destroys the FX3 in low light. Early comparisons show the FX5 remaining close to the FX3 while retaining slightly more detail and colour. The real advantage is having three practical low-noise operating points instead of two.

Autofocus, stabilisation and monitoring

Sony has paired the stacked sensor with the BIONZ XR2 processor and a dedicated AI unit. The camera supports human pose estimation, real-time tracking and subject recognition for humans, animals and birds. Early users report confident autofocus even at ISO 12,800 and in very dark scenes.

The FX5 also has five-axis in-body stabilisation. Dynamic Active stabilisation provides stronger correction with a larger crop, while standard and Active modes preserve more of the angle of view. Availability depends on codec and frame rate, and Clear Image Zoom is unavailable in Dynamic Active mode.

Anamorphic support is better than on previous compact FX bodies, with 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x monitoring de-squeeze. The current implementation still has limitations. In CineD’s preproduction testing, stabilisation did not work with full-frame/open-gate anamorphic X-OCN, and autofocus support for anamorphic lenses was limited. These points should be checked again on final firmware.

The monitoring tools are a clear professional upgrade over the FX3:

  • False colour

  • Waveform

  • Vectorscope

  • Histogram

  • Zebras

  • Focus map

  • Peaking

The larger 3.5-inch four-axis screen and CineAlta-style BIG6 interface make the FX5 feel more like a small production camera than a modified Alpha body. Operators coming from the FX6, BURANO or VENICE should adapt quickly. FX3 users may find the deeper cinema menus slower at first.

The biggest Sony FX5 downsides

No internal ND filter

This is the largest operational omission. The FX6’s electronic variable ND is invaluable for documentary, commercial and run-and-gun work because exposure can change without altering shutter, aperture or depth of field.

The FX5 still requires lens-mounted filters or a matte-box solution. For some operators, internal ND is more valuable than open gate or internal RAW.

No SDI

The FX5 has full-size HDMI, Ethernet and two USB-C ports, but no SDI output. That is acceptable for a compact gimbal or solo-operator camera, but less attractive for production monitoring, long cable runs and established video-assist workflows.

Expensive modular accessories

The body costs €5,400 in Europe, rising to €6,000 with the dedicated XLR-H2 handle. The optional EVF costs extra, as does the timecode adapter.

More frustratingly, the XLR handle and EVF cannot normally be used simultaneously because both depend on the top mounting and Multi Interface Shoe area. A third-party relocation solution can work around this, but a professional camera should not need an additional bracket to combine professional audio and an EVF.

The older FX3/FX30 XLR-H1 handle is not compatible, and existing FX3 cages will not fit because the mounting positions have changed.

New batteries and expensive media

The FX5 uses the newer NP-SA100 battery rather than the NP-FZ100 used by the FX3. Sony claims around 170 minutes of continuous 5K recording under its test conditions, but existing FX3 owners cannot simply reuse their battery collection.

The dual card slots accept SD or CFexpress Type A, but high-bitrate X-OCN modes require fast and expensive media. CFexpress Type A is compact, but it remains less economical than Type B or direct SSD recording.

No still-photography mode

Unlike the FX3, the FX5 is a video-only camera. Sony plans to add frame export later, but that is not a replacement for a proper photo mode. Hybrid shooters still need a second body.

The most exciting slow-motion modes are future features

5K 120p and cropped 4K 240p look impressive on a specification sheet, but they are not launch features. Anyone buying primarily for those modes should wait until the firmware ships and independent tests confirm image quality, crop, rolling shutter, heat management and media requirements.

FX5 vs FX3: should existing owners upgrade?

Upgrade from an FX3 when at least one of these solves a real production problem:

  • You regularly need horizontal and vertical crops from one master take.

  • You want internal RAW without an external recorder.

  • You need proper false colour, waveform and vectorscope monitoring.

  • The ISO 4000 base meaningfully helps your available-light work.

  • Faster 16:9 sensor readout matters for action or handheld shooting.

  • You need a compact camera that fits more naturally into a BURANO or VENICE workflow.

Keep the FX3 when:

  • Your clients receive standard 4K and do not ask for open gate or RAW.

  • You already like the FX3’s low-light image and compact workflow.

  • You need occasional stills.

  • You own FX3 batteries, cages and XLR accessories that would need replacing.

  • The upgrade would not generate new work or save meaningful time.

The FX5 is clearly more capable, but capability alone does not make an upgrade profitable.

FX5 vs FX6: image flexibility or production speed?

The FX5 has the more modern sensor package, internal RAW, open gate, IBIS, newer autofocus and a third base ISO. The FX6 counters with electronic variable ND, SDI, established production ergonomics and a form factor designed around professional audio and connectivity.

Once the FX5’s XLR handle is added, its European launch price of €6,000 sits close to the FX6’s current official price. The decision should therefore be based on workflow rather than model age:

  • Choose the FX5 for internal X-OCN, open gate, stabilisation, autofocus and the smallest possible high-end body.

  • Choose the FX6 for changing light, long-form documentary, crew operation, SDI and faster on-set handling.

The FX5 does not replace the FX6. It prioritises a different set of problems.

Is the Sony FX5 worth waiting for?

Buy at launch if:

  • You need 5K 60p open-gate X-OCN now.

  • Internal RAW removes an external recorder from your rig.

  • You already work in Sony E-mount and S-Log3.

  • You value fast readout, strong autofocus and compact size more than internal ND or SDI.

  • The camera will immediately earn money or reduce production complexity.

Wait for production reviews if:

  • You want confirmed overheating, battery and long-recording behaviour.

  • Your work depends on reliable X-OCN support in a specific NLE.

  • You need verified dynamic-range and exposure-latitude tests from final firmware.

  • You want to see whether the EVF, anamorphic and stabilisation limitations change.

Waiting a few weeks after release is the sensible choice for most buyers who are not working against an immediate production deadline.

Wait for firmware version 2 if:

  • 5K open gate at 120p is the main attraction.

  • You need cropped 4K 240p.

  • You want open-gate XAVC instead of a RAW-only workflow.

  • You are buying based mainly on promised rather than shipping features.

Sony currently plans these additions for August 2027 or later. Buy the launch camera for what it does in August 2026, not for what it may do a year later.

Do not wait if the FX3 or FX6 already fits your work

The FX3 remains a strong compact 4K camera. The FX6 remains the better operational tool for shooters who depend on variable ND and SDI. A newer camera does not invalidate a workflow that is already reliable and profitable.

Grading Sony FX5 footage

The FX5 records S-Log3 with S-Gamut3 or S-Gamut3.Cine, as well as internal X-OCN. For a predictable grade, identify both the recording codec and the selected gamut rather than treating every “S-Log3” clip as identical.

For XAVC S-Log3 footage:

  1. Set the correct S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine input in your colour-management system.

  2. Balance exposure and white balance before the creative look.

  3. Apply a creative LUT designed for that input.

  4. Confirm whether the LUT includes an output transform before adding another Rec.709 conversion.

For X-OCN:

  1. Set the RAW decode and project colour management deliberately.

  2. Check exposure index and white-balance metadata.

  3. Apply any required lens-distortion correction in a supported workflow.

  4. Balance the source before the creative look.

  5. Test the complete output path before production.

The FX5’s extra latitude does not remove the need for correct input transforms or shot balancing. It simply gives the grade a stronger source.

For a film-negative workflow, the Offwhitecolor Kodak Vision3 250D Cineon Emulation includes a dedicated Sony S-Log3 input version. For a cleaner commercial print response without a traditional Cineon print pipeline, OW Essentials No.07 – Printlite 3513 also supports Sony S-Log3.

Final verdict

The Sony FX5 appears to be an excellent compact cinema camera, but not an uncompromised one.

Its strongest features are the fast stacked sensor, internal X-OCN, 5K open gate, useful ISO 4000 base, strong autofocus, advanced monitoring and the option to trade faster readout for cleaner Dual Gain shadows. These are real production tools rather than minor specification updates.

Its weaknesses are equally real: no internal ND, no SDI, costly CFexpress Type A media, a new battery system, no stills mode, limited launch software support and an awkward choice between the XLR handle and EVF. The delayed high-frame-rate firmware makes the launch specification less complete than the headline numbers suggest.

For a new Sony video-first buyer who needs open gate or internal RAW, the FX5 is likely the strongest compact option in the range. For an FX3 owner delivering conventional 4K, it is an upgrade only when the new features solve a billable problem. For run-and-gun shooters, the older FX6 may still be the smarter professional camera.

The best buying rule is simple: purchase the FX5 for the features available at launch. Treat everything on the firmware roadmap as a future bonus.
